Even as ‘Operation Sindoor’ is underway, the freedom movement in Balochistan, Pakistan, has also gained momentum. Various organizations, including the Balochistan Liberation Army, have intensified their attacks on Pakistani soldiers. Mir Yaar Baloch, a member of the ‘Balochistan Freedom Movement’, has played a significant role in bringing the voice of Balochistan’s struggle to the international stage. Through a recent interaction with him, it was possible to understand the ongoing struggle and current situation in Balochistan.

Balochistan’s Independence Is Inevitable

Baloch Leader Mir Yaar Baloch’s Firm Belief

Pune – “Our freedom struggle is neither a covert war nor dependent on funds from foreign powers. It is a purely national movement initiated by the common Baloch people. Hence, Balochistan’s independence is inevitable,” asserted Mir Yaar Baloch, a member of the Free Balochistan Movement and a Baloch human rights activist, in an interaction with Sakal.

The demand for Balochistan’s independence has been gaining momentum, with sustained attacks on the Pakistani military by various organizations, including the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Mir Yaar Baloch has also urged the Indian government to establish a Balochistan embassy in India, and has written to the United Nations seeking recognition for Balochistan as an independent nation. During an interaction on social platform X, he expressed confidence that Balochistan will soon attain independence.

Citing a statement by former Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, he said, “Even some members of the Pakistani Parliament acknowledge that the army is losing control over cities in this region. They too believe that Balochistan’s independence is imminent. Heinous atrocities are being committed against us under the nose of the international community, and yet, the United Nations and other global organizations remain silent. While the US offers to mediate between India and Pakistan, it remains silent on Pakistan’s illegal occupation of Balochistan. Our freedom movement operates within the framework of international laws and the UN charter.”

Heinous Atrocities by the Pakistani Army

“Pakistan was artificially created and is governed by military and political powers from Punjab. They do not trust the Baloch people — not a single army chief has been appointed from Balochistan in the past 77 years. All they want is our mineral wealth,” said Mir Yaar Baloch.

He added, “From the beginning, Pakistan has followed an undemocratic and extremist ideology. Its existence is based on hatred, intolerance, and racism. It is an artificial country — that’s why Bangladesh separated from it. At that time, the Pakistani army raped 200,000 women and killed 3 million people, yet no country took appropriate action. Similarly, to crush Balochistan’s just demands, Pakistan has committed countless atrocities — over 40,000 people, including political workers, professors, students, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and doctors, have been abducted. None were brought before a court. Thousands have been killed. The Pakistani Air Force and tanks are being used against us. Drones obtained from Turkey and China are also being deployed against us.”

A Distinct Identity for Balochistan

Mir Yaar Baloch strongly emphasized that Balochistan is culturally and historically separate from Pakistan.

“Balochistan has had an identity for over 10,000 years. The Mehrgarh civilization is proof — it was an advanced society with organized agriculture and drainage systems. During India’s freedom movement, Balochistan too fought separately for independence. On 27 March 1948, Pakistan illegally occupied our land, ignoring our opposition. That resistance continues today, and our fighters are still active,” he explained.

Pakistan Is Nothing Without Balochistan

“Without Balochistan, Pakistan holds no strategic or economic value. Even Pakistani military officials admit that without our resources and ports, Pakistan is irrelevant to China and the world,” noted Mir Yaar Baloch.

Highlighting China’s geostrategic motives, he said, “China wants to encircle India and threaten its economy, national security, and sovereignty — Pakistan has become its puppet. So far, friendly nations ignored our plea, but now, countries like India, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh are showing sympathy toward our demands.”

Afghanistan’s Support

Mir Yaar Baloch expressed optimism about future Baloch-Afghan cooperation, stating, “Afghanistan is landlocked. Our leader Hyrbyair Marri has held strategic talks with Afghan leaders and promised access to our ports for Afghan trade. There is deep resentment in Afghanistan against Pakistan over the Durand Line, which has divided families. The demand for Pakistan’s withdrawal from this region is now growing stronger.”

Strength of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA)

Commenting on the BLA’s power and impact, Mir Yaar Baloch said, “The current phase of resistance began in 1992 when BLA claimed responsibility for killing four Chinese engineers. Their commanders operate like guerrillas and remain underground. While exact numbers are unknown, some estimates suggest up to 100,000 members. Being part of the BLA is a matter of pride for the youth, who line up to join. Psychologically, Pakistan has lost this war — on the ground, its soldiers are surrendering.”

Hope from Modi

Mir Yaar Baloch praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian forces’ ‘Operation Sindoor’.

“During the Pahalgam attack on innocent tourists, Baloch citizens came out in support of India’s actions against terrorism. Baloch, Afghan, and Sindhi people have welcomed Operation Sindoor. We believe Modi should take decisive action to dismantle terrorist camps in Pakistan and help liberate Balochistan. Its liberation would also be a strategic win for India — Pakistan would lose access to Gwadar port, while India would gain new trade routes and markets,” he concluded.
